Nijisseiki is an asian pear also known as the 20th Century pear. It's an heirloom that was discovered in Japan in 1888.
Asian pears, which are round like apples, are generally pretty easy to grow and do well here in southwest Iowa. Nijisseiki has a nice yellow color, it's sweet, moderately juicy, and it has a mild refreshing flavor.
Nijisseiki ripens early to mid September in southwest Iowa.
