Honeycrisp is a relatively large apple that ripens in early September. It's a cold hardy apple that was developed at the University of Minnesota in the 1960's.
A Honeycrisp apple grown in the home orchard has an excellent flavor and better coloring than the ones you'll find in the grocery store.
It is prone to some diseases such as bitter pit but does better when kept well pruned and open.
The Honeycrisp tree is also loved by Japanese Beetles.
Estimated ripening in Southwest Iowa: September 7
